Hot Tub Insulation

Scroll to explore

When buying a hot tub, insulation is one of the most critical factors affecting energy efficiency, performance, and running costs. A well-insulated hot tub retains heat better, reducing energy consumption and making it more economical to run. The type and quality of the insulation affects energy efficiency and therefore the estimated running costs.

The insulation of a hot tub is not just about what sits inside the hot tub cabinet but also extends to the quality of the cover. A good quality hot tub cover should let almost no heat through. In fact, if you have frost on the ground in the garden and 38 degree water in your hot tub, you should still see a layer of frost on the hot tub lid.

Keeping the Heat In:
Hot Tub Insulation Explained

Hot tub manufacturers use various insulation methods, each offering different levels of heat retention and efficiency.

Full-foam insulation involves filling the entire space between the shell and the cabinet with dense polyurethane foam. This provides maximum heat retention by reducing heat loss through the walls of the tub, keeping the water warm for longer and reducing energy consumption. It also provides structural support for the pipework and plumbing preventing movement during transport, reducing the likelihood of leaks.

Full Foam insulation also has the added benefit of dampening the noise from the pump and jets making the operation a little quieter than with other types of insulation.

The main drawback of full foam insulation is that if there is ever a problem with an area of the tub covered by the foam, it can be harder to access.
