Manufacturing Materials & Components
Material Quality
Overall, much like a lot of household product, the components and general design of a hot tub is similar regardless of brand. Where the major differentiation takes place is component quality, material quality and the construction methods used.
When completing research, often some of the ‘boring’ but critical elements of a hot tub is overlooked. Don’t let disco lights, 100’s of jets and a dozen pumps impress you. Thinking again about cars, a big powerful engine in a very small car is likely to be uncomfortable and not deliver a great experience, this translates the same into hot tubs. This is where Jacuzzi have something called ‘thoughtful design’ where every element of their hot tubs is there for a reason and is constructed with care.
Here’s a breakdown of some of the core components, how they are made and what to consider on your purchasing journey:
01.
The Shell
Possibly the single most important component of any hot tub! The strength of the interior of a hot tub essentially controls its lifespan. If a shell fails at any point, then unfortunately it’s the end of the road for that hot tub, it’s something that simply cannot be repaired with lasting integrity.
How Jacuzzi navigate this is by firstly using the thickest acrylic of all hot tub manufacturers and slow thermoform using their bespoke patented moulds to create their beautiful ergonomic designs, this is just stage one. The shell then goes through a very time-consuming double layering process where it has a polymer resin coat applied to reinforce and toughen whilst still retaining flexibility in the already strong acrylic, the second stage is then a vinyl resin which is essentially the process used for waterproofing the hull of a boat ensuring the water resistancy is impenetrable. These three elements combine to offer the most structurally sound shell on the market and that’s why Jacuzzi put their money where their mouth is and offer a 10-year warranty that covers parts, labour and even a full replacement in that 10-year period should a failure occur!
02.
The Pumps
Everyone knows about pumps, even the newest researcher will ask about pumps so why so important… Pumps are the key driving force to deliver water to your jets and in turn deliver a great massage. This is not a case of more pumps is better, and the number of pumps does not coincide to the quality of massage, think about the right pump to jet ratio to ensure high-volume, low-pressure massage which casually translates to comfort and not itchy and uncomfortable. If you like numbers, then 20-30 jets per pump (2.5 to 4HP) is a pretty accurate rule of thumb to work from. As the biggest manufacturer of hot tubs in the world, this still means that there is expertise out there that can do something better, and the sign of a great manufacturer is utilising these experts to enhance your own products. Jacuzzi have worked closely with the largest manufacturer of pumps in the world, called LX, who supply most of the hot tub market to utilise their skills to create pumps for Jacuzzi. But what this actually means is Jacuzzi’s research and development teams have made close to a dozen bespoke changes to the pump design to ensure it delivers in the way that is required for Jacuzzi’s world leading patented massage. A collaboration of two sets of experts, manufactured to the highest standards that no other hot tub company in the world can access.
03.
The Controls
A very similar situation to the pumps, you want to know that a) your controlling systems are manufactured by an experienced company and b) are future proofed to last the lifespan of your hot tub with relevant technology. There are essentially 2 brands out there that make great electrical systems for hot tubs, and they are Gecko and Balboa. Anything that doesn’t have one of those 2 names on them, you could be running the risk of a short lifespan or quickly out of date technology. Jacuzzi work very closely with Balboa and Gecko to create bespoke control systems all fully customised interfaces to their hot tubs, bespoke top side control panels to ensure that everything not only looks different to ‘off the shelf’ options and not just stuck on but again uses their incredibly impressive research and development team to help tailor performance and functionality to again add more patented operation systems to the Jacuzzi repertoire
04.
The Insulation
You’ll see all sorts of quirky names thrown around for hot tub insulation… mega insulation, thermo-super-something-or-other, big claims, little substance. But what really matters is how well the insulation actually performs. That’s where the ‘R’ Rating comes in. It measures how well a material resists heat loss, and the higher the number, the better.
Some brands will publish their R Rating (which is a good start), but let’s talk about how Jacuzzi® does things, especially on the J300 and J400 series. These models use a smart 3-layer insulation system:
2lb Foam – A dense layer sprayed on the shell to lock in heat and secure the pipework.
½lb Foam – A lighter foam that fills most of the interior, trapping warm air pockets for extra heat retention.
SmartSeal™ Blanket – A ¾-inch wrap made from recycled denim (yes, really). It’s not just quirky, denim has a high R Rating and seriously boosts performance.
Combined, these give an R Rating of 60+, meaning they retain 60 times more heat than an uninsulated hot tub. Pretty impressive.
Of course, great insulation is just one piece of the puzzle, pump efficiency, shell thickness, and electronics all play a role in overall energy performance too. But if you’re comparing models, start with insulation. It’s a solid benchmark.
05.
Jets & Plumbing
Let’s be honest, at a glance, most hot tub jets look pretty similar. Flashy chrome rings, bubbly promises… but there’s a lot more going on beneath the surface.
First up: plumbing. Before water can deliver that blissful massage, it has to reach the jets and do it evenly. Many hot tubs suffer from uneven pressure, especially in the seats furthest from the pump. Jacuzzi® avoids this with Efficient Plumbing. Every pipe is CNC-cut to the perfect length, using kink-resistant tubing. This means shorter routes, less restriction, and consistent pressure across every seat. A small detail? Maybe. But when you’ve got a full tub, it really matters.Next: the jet mix.
Not all jets are created equal. Some brands just blast water and air through the same way for every jet or worse, use blower jets (pure air, not very comfy). Jacuzzi® does it differently. Every jet is individually engineered for a specific mix of water and air, tested to create the perfect vortex behind the jet. Why? To deliver warm, soothing pressure right where it’s needed, without those random cold spurts. And finally: jet quality.
Jets work hard. They spin, pressurise, and deal with constant movement, which makes them a common failure point, especially when they’re overcomplicated. Some brands rely on propellers or even electronics that just don’t last.Jacuzzi’s patented jet design avoids all that. Fewer moving parts, no ball bearings (a known weak spot), and natural spiralling water patterns that others try to imitate with fiddly mechanics. The result? Long-lasting jets that feel amazing and won’t let you down after a few seasons. So yes, jets and plumbing might not look that exciting, but they make a huge difference to the massage you feel, and how long your hot tub lasts.
